How to Find My Computer's Machine ID

The more you know about your computer, the better prepared you will be to troubleshoot problems and to assist a technician when you call for technical support. A good start is knowing how to find your computer ID.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Personal computer
  • Microsoft DOS
  1. 1
Right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties" from the menu. Click on the "Computer Name" tab and record the name of your computer. If you are working with your office computer, this is the identity of your computer on the network. If you are working with a home PC, this is how it is identified on your home network.
  2. 2
Click on the "Start" button and choose "Run" from the menu. Type "CMD" in the box and click "OK." When the DOS window opens, type "IPCONFIG /ALL" at the prompt. The IP address listed is your computer's unique identification on the Internet. You may need this information if you are trying to troubleshoot a faulty Internet connection or problems with your local network. The results also will show a "Physical Address" line. This information also can be useful when troubleshooting connectivity problems.
  3. 3
Look at the sides, top and bottom of your computer for any labels that may contain information, such as the system serial number, the license key for your Windows installation or a special service tag number. This information may be useful when you call for technical support.
