Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a useful tool used for saving or retaining new updates on websites that you frequently visit or websites that are favorited. RSS utilizes an XML code which continuously scans the content and/or subject of subscribed websites to find new information and then gets transmitted back to the user (typically to their web browser or aggregator software).
RSS feeds are usually used on Blogs, however can be used on any website wishing to broadcast and publish information on their site. Whenever updates are made to the site, information is sent which will contain the subject and a short description of the Blog Post. The user will the receive this update to their browser or aggregator on their local machine where they can view if it interests them.

What is an Aggregator?

In order to accept RRS feeds, a feed reader is needed and these are called aggregators. Aggregators are freely available online for download and users will be able to find an interface that fits their needs. RSS feeds can also be accessed from cell phone and PDA devices.
When accessing a website or Blog that you want to add to your aggregator, you can do this by finding an “RSS” or “XML” button on the homepage and clicking on it. You will then be prompted to add that particular feed to your aggregator or within your browser. However some software requires that you put the URL of the feed into your program.
When using email subscriptions you can send / receive newsletters. However RSS feeds can be more convenient in keeping up with newsletter updates as they are prompt and available in an instant. You no longer have to wait for a scheduled time or day to obtain a news summary, and additionally the news will never be blocked through a spam filter. These RSS feeds are used often by users who understand and appreciate the accessibility of fast reports and news that can be readily read and only read certain updates from blogs that are appealing to them.

What is the Reason for using an RSS Feed?

Basically by using an RSS feed, you will be generating more traffic and users to your Blog. Reason being is that users that find your Blog and like it have the ability of conveniently adding your Blog to their aggregator software where they will receive updates whenever you make a post.
A good example of why you should have an RSS feed on your Blog is because whenever you make a new post, regulars to your Blog will have no idea that you’ve made it and will either have to constantly check your site to see if you’ve made a new post or sometimes wont even make their way back to your site.
